Know Your Primary Role in Your Business

Too many business owners think they are responsible for everything, but it's clear that this attitude will lead to a scattered approach. You'll have no clear focus on what your most important tasks are and what you should spend the majority of your time on.

Some owners find themselves in a position where they no longer have a choice about what they should be doing, even in their own businesses. That's because they’re operating in crisis mode… they spend all of their time putting out fires, handling ‘must-do’ tasks and all those things that come up at the last minute.

Defining your primary role and figuring out what your most important tasks are will help you stop spending time on those things others in your organisation should be handling. This will help you solve and back away from ‘crisis mode’.

As a business owner, you are the No.1 manager in your organisation. Your primary responsibility is to grow your business by bringing in more customers and increasing your profits. Increasing profits also means serving and selling more to the captured customers you already have.

In fact, we know that concentrating on making repeat sales to captured customers is a more efficient way to increase profits than to spend a lot of time, money and energy on finding new prospects. Finally, as owner and manager of your business, you need to be concerned about the quality of your product or service and developing product innovations.

Your role should be defined as a manager, business builder and product innovator and you have three primary functions:

  • Growing your business with customer prospecting.
  • Increasing profits by selling more to captured customers.
  • Innovating new products or product improvements and maintaining quality.

The above three tasks can be summed up in two words: marketing and innovation. Those are your top priorities and those should be what you choose to spend the majority of your valuable limited amount of time doing.

So define your role. You're an owner and a manager, not a low paid employee. Budget most of your time to do what an owner should do…find customers, sell to customers, generate repeat sale strategies and constantly strive to improve and upgrade your product.
